Christmas in Groningen: Discover the Magic of Winter
28/11/25 – 4/01/26
In December, Groningen transforms into a true winter wonderland. Wander through beautifully lit streets, soak up the Christmas spirit with festive performances, or warm your hands around a cup of glühwein during WinterWelvaart. This year’s Winter Goud programme is more extensive than ever: the perfect reason to celebrate Christmas in The Netherlands! We’ve listed the city’s most enchanting winter events for you below.
Groningen Christmas market
From 28 November to 4 January, the Christmas Market on the Grote Markt is the heart of Groningen’s festive season. Browse the charming stalls for unique souvenirs, take in the view from the Ferris wheel, and warm up with a rich local hot chocolate. Musicians from the region create a cosy atmosphere with live Christmas tunes. Whether you’re here for the food and drinks or a few laps on the ice rink, the Groningen Christmas Market promises a joyful day out.
Lutje Lokaal Saturday
If you love unique, locally made gifts, Lutje Lokaal Saturday is not to be missed. Lutje means “small” in the local dialect, and this day is dedicated to Groningen’s small businesses. A friendly alternative to Black Friday, which takes place on the same weekend. Join a guided city tour with the Groninger Gidsen Team, or find one-of-a-kind Christmas presents in the charming shops along the Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat.
Swedish Christmas market
On 13 and 14 December, a touch of Scandinavia comes to Groningen! In the city’s old Sugar Factory, over a hundred stalls invite you to immerse yourself in Swedish Christmas traditions, crafts, and music. Join one of the many workshops and take home your handmade gifts. The creative and industrial atmosphere of the Sugar Factory makes this event a truly special experience; a Scandinavian celebration with a Groningen twist.
WinterWelvaart Groningen
WinterWelvaart is where you’ll experience the true warmth of Groningen. It’s more than a Christmas market; it’s a beloved local tradition. The city’s most beautiful canal, Hoge der A, is illuminated with thousands of lights, and historic ships welcome visitors aboard. Skippers share their stories about life at sea, adding a personal touch to the festive atmosphere.
Surrounded by traditional warehouses, market stalls and cosy eateries, WinterWelvaart is a unique celebration of local culture. End your evening at Café De Sigaar, right by the water. Enjoy a cup of homemade glühwein or one of their many beers on tap, all from Groningen’s most charming winter terrace. WinterWelvaart takes place from 19 to 21 December.
